Statement from Congressman Castro on Gov. Abbott’s Restricting Texans Right to Vote

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) issued the following statement on Governor Abbott’s signing Senate Bill 1 into law, restricting Texans right to vote:

“Today, Governor Abbott and Texas Republicans continued their assault on democracy and made it harder for Texans to vote. SB1 is an unprecedented restriction on voting rights in Texas, motivated by the same Big Lie of widespread voter fraud that led to a deadly attack at the U.S. Capitol and an attempted coup on January 6th.”

“This law unjustifiably limits the state’s voting process by banning the distribution of mail-in ballots, banning a drive-thru option, and banning 24-voting voting – all to stop certain Texans from voting. Furthermore, the law empowers partisan poll watchers, such as the Proud Boys, to intimidate Texans while they are voting. SB1 is an autocratic point-shaving scheme designed to help Republicans win elections by stopping Texans from voting.”

“Texas Democrats who courageously broke quorum and called upon Congress to pass national voting rights legislation did everything in their power to protect voting rights and defend our democracy. I commend the Texas House Democratic Caucus for their hard work over many months to prevent even more egregious measures from becoming law.”

“The U.S. House of Representatives already passed the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. Now the U.S. Senate must protect Texas voters and all Americans by immediately passing both bills. The filibuster, an arcane Senate rule and relic of Jim Crow, is not worth the erosion of all Americans constitutionally protected right to vote. American democracy itself is at stake.”
